The Most Effective Networking Formula (especially if you hate networking)


Do you hate networking?

I used to hate networking. I mean despise it.

  • It felt awkward.
  • It felt self-serving.
  • It felt time-consuming.

I talk to a lot of you who feel the same way.

There is no "𝒈𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝒂𝒕 𝒏𝒆𝒕𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒆" that some of us are born with and others weren't.

For those of us who have career ambitions (not a dirty word by the way), networking is a fundamental part of success.

But, most of us don't make the time to network, because it ranks up there with going to the dentist. 

Networking should be a top priority, even if you despise it

I think you know networking is critical to your career, but you may be one of the many who AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS.

You're probably thinking

  • You don't have time.
  • It's not a priority (right now).
  • It's a lot of effort for little immediate return.
  • It's not necessary because you'll get recognized (by your company or your network) if you work hard enough and produce results.

Then, when you find yourself in a sudden job search or need something else, you panic.

You haven't talked to the people in your network in years. But, now you feel like you need to go to them asking for help. 

  • It feels desperate.
  • It feels awkward.
  • It feels needy.

This is one of the reasons to network now, before you're desperate.

But, even if you are in a job search, this approach is incredibly effective.

You can keep the relationship fresh, to 

  • genuinely check in and find out what they're doing, where they're loving their job, and where they might be struggling,
  • listen for opportunities to help them, and
  • to uncover ways they might help you.

And, it can be fun meeting other humans, if you take off the pressure of doing it "right" or getting an immediate result.

Here's the formula I figured out, to turn my avoidance into truly enjoying networking.

The "Super-Networking" Formula

Here's the formula:

  1. First, talk to one of your connections
    • Get an update on what they've been up to. Be interested.
    • Ask and listen to their biggest challenges - personally and professionally.
    • Ask them what what they've been struggling with the most.
    • Find out 1-2 of the problems they're facing, that would make the biggest impact if they were solved.
    • TIP: Don't be weird. This isn't an interview, it's a genuine conversation where you're truly interested in what's going on with them.
  2. Figure out which of your other connections can help the person solve their problem.
    • It could be a direct connection.
    • It could be a connection of a connection.
    • Get creative, finding solutions is fun!
  3. Introduce your 1st connection to the person who could help them solve their problem. Here are 3 ways to do that:
    1. You can send a joint introduction email.
    2. Or, you can get creative and send a short video or audio introducing the two and explaining why you thought they'd be a great match.
    3. Or, you can meet the two for coffee or lunch and spend some bonus time helping them to see how they can help each other.

That's it.

Why It Works

This is such a fun and rewarding approach to networking. And, because it feels good without all the pressure, you're much more likely to do it.

  • It takes off the pressure.
  • It makes it fun.
  • It takes just an hour or two a month.
  • It's incredibly fulfilling to watch the outcome.

You don't want anything in return.

You're being helpful, you're keeping the relationship fresh, and you're feeling great that you've helped someone else.

You'll be surprised how often the goodwill comes back....sometimes directly, sometimes indirectly, sometimes immediately, sometimes in months or years.

This is networking.

And it feels great!

Put this "super-networking" in your calendar once a month+, do it, and then watch the interesting results that flow back to you.
